Peugeot Sport's 2012 Customer Competition Programme

Around the world, in circuit racing and in rallying at national, regional and club levels, there is invariably a Peugeot on the entry list. The Customer Competition Department is one of the cornerstones of Peugeot Sport’s activities and that tradition is poised to continue in 2012. The launches of two news cars – the RCZ and 208 – are set make the headlines this year.

RCZ Peugeot Sport : 50 cars (Europe)

With 250hp under the bonnet, mated to a sequential gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddle-shift levers, plus stunning, feline looks, the RCZ Peugeot Sport has already generated significant interest. In France, the RCZ Racing Cup championship is due to kick off in April (see calendar). More than 20 cars will start the series, with teams like Sainteloc, PH Sport and JSB Competition expected to figure among the favourites. In Germany, a number of RCZ Peugeot Sports will contest the VLN, as well as the Nürburgring 24 Hours thanks to the ‘endurance’ kit which is also available.

Calendar France : Lédenon/GT Tour (April 29), Pau/Grand Prix de Pau (May 13), Val de Vienne/GT Tour (June 24), Magny Cours/GT Tour (July 15), Le Mans/ACO (September 30), Le Castellet/GT Tour (October 28). Nürburgring 24 Hours: May 19-20.

R2 and R4T versions of the 208 (world motorsport)

Following in the footsteps of the celebrated 205, 206 and 207, two competition versions of the Peugeot 208 stand out currently as the development priorities for the technical team of Peugeot Sport’s Customer Competition Department. The ‘diminutive’, feisty R2 is an indispensable part of the line-up will spearhead this drive. The 208 R2 – which turned a wheel for the first time at the end of 2011 – is an ideally affordable yet competitive solution for novices and for anyone who goes rallying for fun. From 2013, it will replace the 207 R3 as the star of France’s ‘Volant’ series. Although currently only at the beginning of its development phase, it should deliver a power output of some 185 horsepower once all the evolutions have been made to its 1.6-litre, normally-aspirated engine. This powerplant will drive through a sequential gearbox with a steering wheel-mounted gear shift lever, and the newcomer will also be lighter than its predecessor. A test programme of 8,000km on gravel and tarmac is planned before the car goes on sale in the course of 2012. Another eagerly awaited version of the 208 is the R4T which is currently at the design stage at Peugeot Sport’s Customer Competition Department. It will comply with the latest FIA regulations and will be ready to take over from Peugeot Sport’s best-selling rally car ever – the 207 S2000 – from the first quarter of 2013.

More than one hundred 207 S2000s sold worldwide

The beginning of the year was marked by the sale of the one-hundredth 207 S2000. In the space of a single month, six more cars have been sold since. The 207 S2000 will be active in a long list of national championships thanks to programmes run by local Peugeot subsidiaries and privateer teams. The car continues to be considered a benchmark and will also be seen in the European Rally Championship, on certain rounds of the World Rally Championship, the IRC and the Middle East Championship. Germain Bonnefils, winner of the 2011 ‘Volant 207’, will contest the French gravel championship in a 207 S2000. Other top cars will be seen on France’s asphalt championship. The 207 S2000 Evolution+ now figures in the Peugeot Sport catalogue at the same price as the former version. Indeed, it is the only version currently available and its specification includes the very latest developments:
- wide tracks and bodywork kit
- 3B-spec engine

The ‘Volant 207’ series and ‘Rencontres Peugeot Sport’ meetings

Peugeot’s two feeder series – the ‘Volant 207’ in rallying and the ‘Rencontres Peugeot Sport’ in circuit racing – have both been running for more than 30 years. The former has revealed a long list of top French drivers in the past, and this year’s calendar features another mix of gravel and asphalt rounds.
Volant 207 calendar: Rallye du Touquet (March 16-17), Rallye Terre des Causses (March 30-April 1), Rallye Terre d’Auxerre (April 21-22), Rallye Lloret - Terre de Catalunya (May 26-27), Rallye des Vins-Mâcon (June 16-17), Rallye Terre de Lozère – Sud de France (August 31-September 1), Rallye Cardabelles Millau Aveyron (October 12-14), Rallye du Var (November 23-25).

The success of Peugeot Sport’s ‘Rencontres’ meetings is founded on the popularity of the former Simca Racing Team and PTS series. This year, it will provide some 300 drivers with an opportunity to race each other in one of four competitions: the ‘THP Spider Cup’ and ‘Coupe 207 THP’, plus the ‘Relais 207’ and ‘Relais 206’ relay races.
Rencontres Peugeot Sport calendar : Magny Cours (March 31/April 1), Nogaro (April 21-22), Val de Vienne (May 5-6), Albi (June 9-10), Lédenon (September 15-16).

RCZ PEUGEOT SPORT : March, 30th 2012
AN INTERNATIONAL CAREER FOR THE RCZ PEUGEOT SPORT

Designed and developed in Peugeot Sport's Vélizy workshops, near Paris, the RCZ Peugeot Sport has met with considerable success ahead of its maiden season of racing. Cars of different specifications will be seen in action in several European countries this year.

France: RCZ Racing Cup (six rounds, 12 races)

Some 20 'sprint'-spec RCZ Peugeot Sports are expected at Ledenon for the year's first RCZ Racing Cup France clash which will be held within the framework of the 2012 GT Tour on April 28-29. The championship's calendar features six rounds: four as part of the GT Tour programme, plus one at Pau and another at Le Mans. Each round will comprise two races in addition to the free practice and qualifying sessions.
Lédenon: April 28-29 / Pau Ville: May 12-13 / Val de Vienne: June 23-24 / Magny-Cours: July 14-15 / Le Mans: September 29-30 / Le Castellet: October 28-29.

Italy: the RCZ Racing Cup incorporated in the touring car series

Around 10 RCZ Peugeot Sports are expected to contest their first season of racing in Italy as part of the country's touring car endurance championship. The format of these meetings features two 38-minute 'plus 1 lap runs' which will certainly bring out the best in the 'sprint' version of the RCZ Peugeot Sport. The calendar is currently based on six rounds.

Imola: April 14-15 / Vallelunga: May 5-6 / Misano: July 7-8 / Magione: July 21-22 / Mugello: September 21-23 / Monza: October 21-22.

Germany: the VLN series and the Nürburgring 24 Hours

Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia has entered two RCZ Peugeot Sports in the SP2T class (petrol turbocharged engines of less than 1,600cc). The objective of the programme is to attempt to win the VLN title, as well as the discipline's star race: the Nürburgring 24 Hours. To adapt the car to this type of long race, Peugeot Sport has developed an 'endurance' kit which can be fitted to the 'sprint' version as required. The year's action kicks off on Saturday, March 31.

Round 1: March 31 / Round 2: April 14 / Round 3: April 28 / Nürburgring 24 Hours: May 19-20 / Round 4: June 23 / Round 5: July 7 / Round 6: July 21 / Round 7: August 4 / Round 8: August 25 / Round 9: September 29 / Round 10: October 27.

Denmark: a RCZ Peugeot Sport converted for rallying

Although it was primarily designed and developed for circuit racing, the RCZ Peugeot Sport has sparked interest in Denmark where two cars have been acquired for rallying purposes. The modifications which are in the process of being homologated are being carried out directly by Team DK and involve the chassis, the fitment of the co-driver's equipment and additional protection. The team will contest the Danish Championship.

The strengths of the RCZ Peugeot Sport

The RCZ has benefited from the vast motorsport expertise that Peugeot Sport has acquired over a period of more than three decades in order to deliver an unrivalled quality and performance package for its price. Like the production version, the race version comes under the ‘premium’ heading, as suggested by its expressive styling, carefully finished interior, pedigree mechanicals and advanced technologies. The RCZ Peugeot Sport targets all types of driver, from the most battle-hardened competitors, who will be able to fine-tune their set-ups thanks to the data logging system, to gentlemen drivers will enjoy the pleasure ensured by the generous torque of its 250-horsepower 1.6 THP engine. Its other chief strengths include its rigorously engineered chassis, braking performance and, above all, its paddle-shift sequential gearbox. Gear shift times are minimal and it is possible to move up and down the box without using the clutch. This means drivers can keep their hands on the steering wheel to remain in total control at all times.
For a price of €54,900 (exclusive of VAT), the RCZ Peugeot Sport is delivered ready to race after being tested.

Peugeot's RCZs finish first and second at the Bathurst 12-hour race

Team Peugeot RCZ has finished the Bathurst 12-hour event in an impressive position – first and second in their class. At the end of the 12-hours, Car 21 (driven by French driver Bruce Jouanny and V8 Supercar drivers Andrew Jones and David Wall) climbed 20 positions from the start to finish 16th overall and first in the class.
Car 20 (driven by Jason Bright, Stephane Caillet and Julien Rueflin) was forced to pit during the race after a fuel tank issue lead to a tank change. But, the car continued on to finish the race and, after dropping to 36th position while in the pits, ended up clawing back to 23rd – an impressive result after being out of the race for an hour and a half.

Peugeot RCZ Sport Team Manager Cyrus Ayari was very happy with the team’s overall results

"I’m very happy for Peugeot Australia and Sime Darby" he said. "Our two cars had really only minor issues because the fuel tank leak was the consequence of a crash incident. It was racing – the drivers did zero mistakes in tricky conditions, the team was fantastic – no mistakes. In true Bathurst form, the heavens opened up over the mountain in the last two hours of the race which created perfect conditions to show off the handling capabilities of the RCZ. In strategy in the first 10 hours we were not lucky enough. Every safety car wasn’t entering the track in our favor. So then the rain comes and the track became very tricky and thanks to the handling of our car we managed to get out of the trouble and our competitors they went into the wall more than they were supposed to."

"We are one/two in our category which was expected but, it’s very important, we did 16th overall among much bigger cars than ours with two to three times more power. How could we demonstrate more acutely that you don’t need a huge car to go fast? The handling is fantastic and all through race we were among the quickest." said Olivier Perez, General Manager. French driver Bruce Jouanny in the winning car said: "It’s about car reliability, the team’s car preparation and the team’s experience. From the driver’s it is no mistakes. The six drivers they are professional drivers. And consistency is so important. Even if our lap times are not the fastest overall we were all capable of lapping in the same second for 12 hours.’’

The Peugeot Sport RCZ’s are powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190kW @ 6500rpm, 290Nm @ 3500-5500rpm. The suspension has been modified, an additional fuel tank allows 100 litres of fuel to be carried and a modification has been made to the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Andrew Jones, team driver of the winning RCZ said the team’s help and support and knowledge was paramount in the win.  "I would to think Peugeot for making it happen within Australia and France. Without support motor racing doesn’t happen and there was plenty of it from both parties,’’ said Andrew Jones. "Secondly to Cyrus, Eric and Olivier and the whole team - thanks for welcoming us and making us comfortable from the outset. 12-hour style racing is very different (to V8s) and they were willing to pass on our knowledge to give us the best result.’’
