The Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE lightweight concept car will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show next month. No pictures are available yet, but Peugeot has confirmed that the supermini boasts a headline CO2 emissions figure of 49g/km and yet can complete the 0-62mph sprint in 8.0 seconds.

Built by Peugeot and oil company Total, the 208 HYbrid FE is designed to capitalise on the research conducted by both firms into better aerodynamics, weight saving and drivetrains.

Starting with the current Peugeot 208 1.0-litre VTi 68bhp, which emits 99g/km of CO2 and plods from 0-62mph in 14 seconds, the HYbrid FE will feature a more aerodynamic design with a much lower co-efficient of drag than the production model. Special tyres and wheels will contribute to reduce rolling resistance.

Peugeot has also worked on weight reduction, replacing body panels and windows with carbon-fibre reinforced composite and polycarbonate materials respectively to cut 200kg from the current production 208’s 975kg kerbweight.

Finally, the powertrain has been upgraded. The 68bhp three-cylinder petrol engine gets a revised combustion cycle, as well as reduced weight and friction. This is connected to an EGC automated manual gearbox which incorporates an electric motor and a battery taken directly from Peugeot’s endurance racing programmes.

Hybrid Air comprises a conventional petrol-powered internal combustion engine, mated to a bespoke epicyclic automated transmission, assisted by a hydraulic motor that’s powered by compressed air. The motor and a pump are positioned in the engine bay on the transmission, fed by a compressed air tank underneath the car, running parallel to the exhaust. The motor and pump can refill the tank with air through harnessing the energy of regenerative braking.

The 2008's internal combustion engine has been extensively reworked to further boost its efficiency. The 1.2 VTI uses 'Diamond Carbon' coating on its components to reduce friction by 30 per cent and split-cooling to reduce warm-up time. It is also 21kg lighter than in previous installations.

The Hybrid Air system is able to run in three modes; in Air (ZEV), the hydraulic motor powers the car using the compressed air stored in the tank; the petrol engine isn't active. As the air depressurises, it displaces a corresponding amount of oil, which runs the hydraulic motor.

The 2008 Hybrid Air can run on petrol power alone, typically when out of urban environments. Combined mode uses both the petrol engine and hydraulic motor to power the car when increased performance is called for. The hydraulic motor can be driven off the compressed air reserves of its pump.

Peugeot claims the technology is capable of a 45 per cent improvement in urban fuel consumption, as a Hybrid Air-equipped car would be running in Air mode for 80 per cent of the time in town. In a B-segment car such as the Citroën C3, emissions of just 69g/km and fuel economy of 97.4mpg have been claimed. The PSA group aims to use Hybrid Air technology to develop a 140mpg car.

A head-up display and seven-inch touchscreen are also standard inside the 2008. The latter gives access to Peugeot Connect Apps, which uses 3G to give live information such as weather conditions, traffic and local attractions at any time. The 2008 will be launched with 11 apps and Peugeot will eventually introduce an app store with additional content such as social media, email and Wikipedia.

Many external styling cues from other models in the Peugeot range feature on the 2008. The 'claws' in the tail lights, first seen in the 508, make an appearance whilst the new Peugeot grille is also prominent. The headlights are said to resemble cats' eyes. Gilles Vidal, Peugeot's Director of Style, said that he wanted the 2008 to be more refined and elegant than an SUV.

At launch, the 2008 will be available with two petrol and three diesel engine choices, all available with a stop-start system. The petrol range comprises a 1.2-litre VTi with 81bhp and a 118bhp 1.6-litre version. The diesels range in output from 67bhp to 113bhp. The petrol range will be bolstered in the near future with a  turbocharged three-cylinder powerplant. Offering either 109 or 128bhp, Peugeot claims the engine is 12kg lighter than a four-cylinder equivalent.
